Landing on the Ice at Isle au Haut - January, 2010 What better way to spend a cold but clear weekend in January than to fly from Rutland, Vermont, to Isle au Haut, Maine, and land on Long Pond for a few days of skating, ice-fishing, canoe towing, a campfire, lunch and just getting together to relax.  Instead of a 7+ hour drive and connecting with the Mail Boat in Stonington we were able to do the 1 1/2 hour flight and land right on the island.  We stayed for 3 days and then  pre-heated the airplane engine before we left on Monday.   I can't think of a much better use for an airplane.
